After months of designing and DIYing this space, it’s finally time to reveal our primary bedroom makeover! I’ll be honest, this is more of a soft reveal as there are still some lingering details I need to sort through. Even so, the transformation this room has undergone to make this bedroom into our organic modern oasis truly blows my mind.

Primary Bedroom Renovation Recap
In case you missed it, here’s what we did to transform this room:
- Organic Modern Primary Bedroom Mood Board
- DIY Slat Wall with Hidden Closet
- DIY Upholstered Bed
- DIY Nightstands
- Designing a Bedroom to Promote Healthy Sleep
Primary Bedroom Before
Let’s rewind and look at where this primary bedroom started… I painted our headboard wall black three years ago, and this room has sat mostly untouched since.
Progress
Custom Slat Wall with Hidden Closet
The first thing I did was build this huge custom shelving unit. I designed it specifically to fit our suitcases on the bottom, and then evenly spaced the rest of the shelves to store linens as well as my husband’s racing gear. It is truly amazing what peace hidden storage can give you!
DIY Upholstered Linen Bed
The difference a fully upholstered makes in a room is quite astounding. I’ve never had more than a headboard, and let me tell you, I’m never going back! This bed is as DIY as it gets, I even dyed the linen a custom color (because I’m a little extra). You can read all about that process in this blog post: How to Dye Linen and Get Perfectly White Sheets.
DIY Nightstands
These nightstands were just perfect to fit my organic modern style! They’re not a full DIY as they come ready-to-build, but you do have to finish them, and I also added custom drawer knobs to tie them in with the rest of the room.
Organic Modern Bedroom Reveal
A few other things we did to give this room new life, such as all new organic bedding, a new ceiling fan, wool rug, linen curtains, and this gorgeous leather chair.
Overall, this room has SUCH A VIBE that I just can’t do justice through photos. It almost gives you the same feeling you get when you’re in a forest surrounding by trees with the sun dipping below the horizon. It’s dark and moody, yet still light and airy. You’re surrounded by nature in different forms, and it just feels GOOD.
What’s Left?
I know this room looks finished, but I still have some details to sort out that I ran out of time to complete.
Here’s what’s left on my list for our primary bedroom:
- Finish my custom painting, frame & hang
- Automate my curtains to open in the morning and close at night
- Add picture rail molding to the black wall (because I hate making and patching nail holes)
- Add wall sconce to reading nook
