Primary Bedroom Mood Board & Renovation Progress – Spring 2023 ORC Week 1

Can I just say, renovating an entire room is hard. At least, it is when you have some big DIY dreams and underestimate the realistic time it takes to complete them! Our primary bedroom renovation has definitely taken longer than I intended, but I’m so excited for the direction it’s headed.

If you’ve been following along for a while, then you know that I started this primary bedroom renovation for the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge (see my previous updates HERE). I had this elaborate closet addition planned, which included adding a custom slat wall with hidden doors. I thought it would take 3-4 weeks – more like 3-4 months! But, it was totally worth it and everything I envisioned it to be. So, for the Spring ORC, I am planning to finish the rest of my bedroom.

This week I’m walking through where we started, how far this room has come, and all the plans I have to finally finish my primary bedroom!

Our Primary Bedroom Over the Years

It’s always fun to look at how much our bedroom has changed since we first bought our home! We started with a pale yellow room without any real feature. The walls were marked up and just begging for an update. Naturally, the first thing I ever did in this room is paint the headboard wall BLACK. I had never painted anything black in my life, but it felt like something I wanted to do, so I took the leap and I’ve been obsessed with black walls ever since!

I later added a headboard, some wall lamps, and hung my wood and leather curtain rods. In the Fall, I added a modern ceiling fan from Fanimation, got new organic bedding from Sleep & Beyond, bought a new wool rug, and of course, tackled building in a closet and disguising it as a custom slat wall. My custom slat wall closet gives the room SUCH A VIBE! I wanted to complete that before moving on to the rest of the room because I knew it would totally change the feel of the space.

Primary Bedroom Renovation Progress

All in all, this room has made a lot of progress, but it’s still in that phase of feeling incomplete. For this Spring ORC, my plan is to build myself a new charcoal linen upholstered bed frame, DIY these nightstands, install motorized curtains (because we all deserve a little luxury in our lives), and add all the finishing touches! The jury is still out on if I should add molding to the black wall or not (actually, I’d love for y’all to tell me what you’d do!).

Primary Bedroom Makeover Mood Board

In the past I’ve tried to name my style, but I always felt like that put me in an unnecessary box. I enjoy mixing styles and care more about filling my home with things I truly love rather than things that fit a specific style. That said, I would describe this room as “Gentlemen’s Club meets Organic Modern.” Think moody, but also light and airy, textures, natural materials like wood and leather, mostly neutral colors, some modern, some vintage, a blend of luxury with nature, and that’s about where my style lands! So that’s exactly what I’m aiming for with our primary bedroom.

Spring 2023 ORC Bedroom Renovation Plan:

If I learned anything from not finishing our primary bedroom renovation in the Fall, it’s that I need a realistic plan (a.k.a. more time than I think for each DIY). In order to complete this room in the next 8 weeks, I’ve created a prioritized list of all projects/to-do’s along with deadlines:

  1. DIY Charcoal Linen Upholstered Bed Frame – Complete by Week 3
  2. DIY Nightstands – Complete by Week 4
  3. Headboard wall moulding??? – Decide and Complete by Week 5
  4. Source and Install Motorized Curtain Rods, Hem Curtains – Complete by Week 6
  5. Finish Painting, Frame & Hang – Complete by Week 7
  6. Source/make decor items (mirror, frames, lamp, throw, etc.) – Complete by Week 7
  7. Room Reveal – Week 8!

My favorite part about the One Room Challenge is seeing all the fantastic room makeovers! Be sure to check them out on the One Room Challenge Blog
