Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Week 6 – Will We Make It?

Stretchy Daybed Mattress Covers

Okay y’all, it’s week 6 of the One Room Challenge! I’m feeling like things are coming together, but also wondering if I’ll get it all done before the final reveal just two weeks away!

I needed a mental break with everything going on so I haven’t given much of an update (or accomplished as much as I had planned) these past few weeks. So, here’s an overview of what we’ve completed so far and what we have left to do to finish our Home Office / Guest Room makeover…

Week 8: Final Reveal!

A few things we completed these past few weeks:

New Ceiling Fan!

My original plan for this room did not include a ceiling fan. I wanted to forgo the outdated ceiling fan for an attractive light fixture like all the designers seem to be doing nowadays. Since we have central cooling, I figured it unnecessary. My husband firmly disagreed. As soon as we took down the existing fan, I knew he was right. Even with his small stand-alone fan, that room gets so hot!

Built-in Closet Shelving

Working inside a closet is a bit tricky, but it really helps to have lights! We didn’t want to mess with wiring to add lights to the closet, so we bought these battery operated LED puck lights. I screwed three into the ceiling and attached two to the wall on either side with Command Strips. They worked perfectly! Although the lights aren’t very bright, they provide adequate lighting so the closet doesn’t feel like a black hole. Of course, we didn’t have the lights up yet when I painted the walls, so I stuck the lamp inside the closet so I could see, ha!

One Room Challenge Week 6 Update-06

We removed the old closet organizer that didn’t function well for our closet. Then we built new shelves (our first time doing this BTW!). The old organizer made it difficult to access the back corners of the closet, which resulted in tons of wasted space. Now, we have shelving that is accessible and makes the closet feel much more open, which will be perfect for our little closet office. I painted the shelves the same color as the walls so they look built-in. We still need to add the cross shelf that will serve as our “desk.” I’ll share more on that next week!

Daybed Mattress Covers

Dressing up our DIY daybed proved to be a bit more complicated than I expected. Originally, I planned on just using twin sheets to cover the mattresses. However, it turns out it’s incredibly difficult to find sheets that actually fit a 6 inch mattress. Who knew? Sheets tend to look sloppy unless they’re perfectly fitted, so that was not going to work. After hours of searching, I finally found a solution: stretchy sheets! I found these stretchy microfiber sheets on Amazon and, to my surprise, they worked perfectly. They fit multiple mattress depths, but since they’re stretchy, they actually stay in place and make it so easy to keep these mattresses looking like a tidy couch rather than an unmade bed. We decided to get the dark grey sheets which adds to the moodiness of the room and makes the wood on the daybed pop.

Remaining Projects:

  • 14ft DIY floating shelf
  • Finish closet doors
  • Add the “desk shelf” to finish the closet office
  • DIY room divider –I’m now debating if I want to do this, mostly due to time!
  • Hang the gallery wall
  • Decorate and add finishing touches

With only two weeks left and my husband gone this weekend and next, I’m wondering: Will we make it??

Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Budget Update:

I sold some of the original items from the room and that helped offset the cost of the new and improved versions!
